Listeria Deaths & Nightly Roundup

Two deaths from eating contaminated cantaloupe are reported in North Texas. Tuesday, Tarrant County Public Health officials confirmed the death of an elderly resident with underlying medical conditions, and illness in a second case. Monday, Dallas County reported an 89 year old resident died from listeriosis, one of four cases.

Carrie Williams, with the Department of State Health Services says 14 cases have been reported in Texas, and the number is likely to grow.

Williams: The incubation period with listeriosis is tremendously long. Symptoms can occur anywhere from three to 70 days after exposure, which is what makes these cases so difficult to solve.

The listeria-contaminated cantaloupe from Jensen Farms in Colorado was shipped to Texas between July and September 10th. It has been recalled. Williams says anyone with symptoms of diarrhea, fever and muscle aches should see a doctor.

Top Parkland Managers Denied Merit Raises

Dallas County Commissioners approved Parkland Hospital's budget Tuesday -- minus some eight million dollars in performance bonuses for top administrators.

Commissioner Elba Garcia said those merit raises would be inappropriate after the hospital failed a critical federal investigation and must submit to outside management oversight. And she says rescinding the raises will not hurt the hospital's ability to recruit top health professionals.

Garcia: The Board did look at some of those salaries, current salaries without incentives. And guess what. They're very competitive in the marketplace.

Friday, the Parkland Board reworked its budget to eliminate the bonuses for a dozen top managers. They include the CEO, and Chief Medical Officer, plus the directors of Medical and Surgical Services and Nursing Operations.

Pay For Jurors Cut

Starting Wednesday, jurors in Texas take a "pay cut".

Since 2006, jurors have gotten six dollars for the first day of service, and 40 dollars for each day thereafter. Tarrant County Administration G.K. Maenius told commissioners the Legislature cut that amount in the budget.

Maenius: So the Comptroller will certify a daily amount that she'll reimburse on a quarterly basis. That amount is 28 dollars.
Brooks: So that amount may change from quarter to quarter?
Maenius: Yes sir it will, possibly, yes.

Counties pay jurors, then get reimbursed from a state fund supported by a four dollar fee on tickets and offenses. Less of that is now going for juror compensation.
